Accomack-Northampton County Court Records 1641, 1643
August 2, 1641
Whereas divers persons have Contrary to former Order and severall Commands given them, as well from the Governor and Counsell, as by the Commander and Commissioners of this County, not to travell abroad from theire severall houses and Plantations without Carryeing theire Armes and Ammunitions, who have higherto bene delinquent therein, and Contemning the Authoritye and Commandes, It is therefore Ordered that all such whose names are subscribed for theire Offence heerin at present shall meete at the parish Church of Ackowmack upon Sattorday next and there Cutt up all the Weedes as well about the Church as also the Church paths neare adjacent thereto. And it is further Ordered that all such from the Age of twenty to sixty who shall heerafter be found delinquent to walk abroad from theire dwellings and Plantations without theire gunns fixed and a quantitye of powder and shott with them. (sworne Officers and Chirurgions Excepted) and being found soe delinquent by the Commander Commissioners or Commissioner, Sheriff, Constable, or any other his Majesties Officers, they or eyther of them are to present the names of such Offenders heerin to the next Monthely Court, and there to be Committed into the Custodye of the Sheriff for twelve howers and Fine Five poundes of tobacco perpoll and pay the Sheriffes Fees, Which fine of Five poundes of tobacco is to be levyed by the Sheriff upon theire Estate, and to remayne for the publique use of the County, And further who shalbe found delinquent in Cutting of Weedes as aforesayd, the Sheriff to make Retorne of theire names to the next Monthely Court, who are to receive such further Censure for theire neglect therein as shalbe thought fitt by the Commander, and Commissioners. It is ordered that noe person or persons whatsoever within the County of Northampton Except those of the Commission shall from henceforth travel from house to house within the said County without a sufficient Fixed gun with powder and shott upon the penaltie and forfeiture of one hundred pounds of Tobacco to publique use and to bee imprisoned during the Commanders pleasure.
